Our Executive Staff

James "Jim" Heustess

The founder of AWS, Jim Heustess, also co-found American Refuse Systems, Inc. (ARS) in the 1970’s and First Tee Transport, Inc. (FTT) in 2002.

ARS was a full service refuse collection company. ARS operated in four states (North and South Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia). It hauled residential, commercial, and industrial refuse, and provided residential recycling in most of its divisions. ARS had residential contracts with, among others, City of Sanford, Town of Southern Pines, Town of Siler City, Bertie County, Martin County, Halifax County and Northampton County in North Carolina. In South Carolina, ARS had contracts with Florence County, Marion County, Horry County, City of Marion, City of Mullins and several others. AWS also served several hundreds of businesses in these areas, operated transfer stations and hauled refuse to regional landfills. When ARS sold its operations to Waste Management in 1995 it had annualized revenue of approximately seventy million dollars, approximately six hundred fifty employees, and approximately three hundred seventy five pieces of rolling stock.

FTT was formed in 2002 to take advantage of the highly segmented transfer station operation and long distance transport portion of the refuse industry. When Heustess sold his interest back to the company in 2004, the company had annualized revenues of approximately twenty-five million dollars, approximately one hundred twenty- five tractors and approximately two hundred and fifty trailers. At the time FTT operated in North and South Carolina and Georgia. FTT has long-term hauling contracts with Waste Management, Waste Industries, and Allied Waste in North and South Carolina and Georgia. FTT’s corporate offices are located in Southern Pines, NC.
